I was 3rd row too. The chairs didnt last long. Everyone was pushing forward so being that everyone was standing the seats just collapsed and were folded up all aover the floor.

While this is not the best all around Jack straws(see 79) the guitar break-jam before the final verse is what its all about and this one is ripping and goes on and on,bar after bar which is why it times out as one of the longest AND best versions.

After Jack I couldnt take the crush anymore and went ALL the way back to the rear of the dome as far from the stage as possible

1983 and 84 Jerry's 'issues' with the persian decended until the summer and especially fall of 84 when there was no hiding something bad was going on and not just the pers. His weight gain, long, greasy hair. To be frank his hygeine. The shows of this period are 'dynamic' in that the highs are high but the lows are low. Shows were very uneven and Garcia rarely if EVER got thru a complete show tune g the lyrics correct on every tune. But as I said the highs were high and this JACK STRAW is one of those highs.

I spoke to him years later about this period and he was basically going through opiod depression. Cared about little but staying high and 'numb.' As Jerry admitted its the ultimate comfort drug and William Burroughs commented that as long as you have your dope your 'happy' lying down and staring at your shoes all day

Subject: What a terrible show
A sloppy, uninspired dial it in kinda experience. Bobby is into something b/c he sounds f'ed up- esp. in set one. I'll pass.

the whole show was smokin'. Jer wasn't the only one rippin' it up. the entire band was intense,in time, and simultaneously pounding it out.
I've been to my fair share of shows, listened to thousands more and that's the cleanest, white hot, best jack straw EVER,EVER played. Jer's licks are indescribable,
but the whole band played it and it leaves me speechless. All i can do is play it again, shake my head, play it again, and again and again......

Stay tuned at the end of CC Rider. The Take a Step Back by Bobby is one of the spaciest occurrences I have heard to date.

Subject: First Show
This was my first Dead show and I ingested some windowpane that was going around the parking lot...blew my mind. I was freaking, people were melting all around me, then the show starts we had great seats 20 rows from the friend grabs two of the folding chairs on the floor and starts running with them screaming towards the front of the stage. To this day I still think it was he who started the entire push to the front of the stage that caused Bobby to do the "take a step back" routine. I was freaking out the entire time, I just wanted to flee the building, but my other buddy kept me grounded, and the show was kicking. Still one of my favorite shows to listen to. One of my favorite memories in life, first year of college and truly a free time in my worries.

The only problem is that it's in mono. My old analogs many years ago were also in mono. Hopefully the powers that be will open up the vault to all before we get too old. Thanks for the upgrade Charlie.
